The International Year of Sport and Physical Education 2005 was used as a platform to bring the world’s attention to the role sport plays in society and on how sport and physical education can be used to reach development objectives, such as the Millennium Development Goals. IYSPE 2005 ensured sport and physical education were recognized as important tools for improving public health and as a ‘universal language’ that can bridge social, religious, racial and gender differences.
The IYSPE 2005 Report highlights activities in:
Over 100 United Nations member States (in total 70 countries appointed national focal points for IYSPE 2005);
16 United Nations funds, programs and specialized agencies;
28 sports organizations; and
33 governmental and non-governmental agencies.

The World Games 2005 Participants’ Guide
In a special section of the World Games 2005 Participants’ Guide – distributed among the 5,000 athletes and officials taking part in 2005 Duisburg – the IWGA published a welcoming address by Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace. In the same publication, the IWGA dedicated three pages to sport and physical education contributing to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.
