Together with the entire world of sports, the International World Games Association is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Juan Antonio Samaranch. He was widely credited with renewing and fundamentally changing the landscape of the Olympic Movement.

It was under the leadership of HE J. A. Samaranch that the International Olympic Committee officially acknowledged the important role of The World Games within the Olympic Movement. In October 2000, then President Samaranch was the signatory to the Memorandum of Understanding between the IOC and IWGA.

Juan Antonio Samaranch opened The World Games in Karlsruhe (GER, 1989) and Lahti (FIN, 1997). He also appointed the current IOC President, Jacques Rogge, as permanent observer to the IWGA Executive Committee from 1999 to 2000.
