fasciNATIONS worldgames
The World Games have come of age. From their humble beginnings on the campus of the Santa Clara University in California, the multi-sport games have steadily gained momentum throughout a quarter century. With an ever increasing number of participating sports, athletes and nations, The World Games have developed into another highlight of the international sporting calendar. Their seventh edition takes place in Duisburg, Germany, from July 14 to 24, 2005. 4,500 athletes and officials from 100 nations gather at the junction of Rhine and Ruhr to contest coveted medals and join in a celebration of unity and friendship. The appropriate motto for 2005 Duisburg: fasciNATIONS worldgames!

Ball sports and much more: competition at the highest level in 30+ diverse, popular and spectacular sports are the mainstay of The World Games 2005 Duisburg. ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’ on land, in the water, in the air! No other multi-sport event unites as much variety in as compact a program as do The World Games. The world’s best athletes in 34 official and 6 invitational sports search for excellence on tatami mats, on cloth-covered tables, on parquet and on turf, high in the sky or below water – over a period of elevn days. 963 World Games medals in 168 events are contested during 2005 Duisburg. Nine events in six invitational sports enhance the ample offer even further. Artistic and dance sports, martial arts, precision and strength sports have on thing in common: albeit being in trend with millions of enthusiasts around the globe, they are still to be discovered by many more.

The 2005 Duisburg slogan creates high expectations and certainly puts the pressure on the organizers. Against the backdrop of an unsuccessful bid for the 2012 Olympics – Leipzig failed to make the cut and is not among the five candidates still in the running to host the Games of the XXX Olympiad – the stakes are high - but so is the hosts' self-confidence.
“We intend to highlight our strengths. Duisburg and the entire region have an impeccable track record when it comes to organizing major events in international sports. Hosting The World Games is definitely a part of that tradition,” Duisburg’s Mayor, Adolf Sauerland, expresses his optimism on behalf of 11 million people.
The Rhine-Ruhr area at the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, the self-proclaimed ‘Land of Sports’, counts among the most densely populated in Europe. 500,000 spectators are expected at the turnstiles to the World Games venues. And 2005 Duisburg aspires to go way beyond being an elite and international sporting event. With an attractive cultural program surrounding the games, they become a multi-faceted get-together on a truly global scale!
