LAPANO Venues

Behind the acronym LAPANO towers a monument to Duisburg’s industrial past, a colossus which was literally cast in iron. The “LAndschaftsPArk NOrd” is a former steel mill turned scenic park.

Landschaftspark Nord73 million tons of iron were produced here between 1903 and 1985; blast furnaces were operating 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. When their fires went out for good, the foundry became a truly unique park for recreation, for culture and for sports. A climbing garden has been created in the former ore bunkers; the gasometer has been converted into a diving center. The engine and the blower houses have become multi-purpose venues for just about anything – including martial arts and indoor trial competitions – with a total capacity of up to 5’000 people.

When the night falls over the LAPANO, artificial illumination immerses the contours of the cooling tower and the steel structures in a flood of bright colors: the blast furnaces light up again.
